Handicaps

With the exception of V (Sunbeam) and M (Firebird) classes, all boats which race with FSC must have a handicap in an attempt ensure that racing is fair. There are several handicapping or rating schemes used:

  • IRC: a rating evaluated annually by the RORC, which employs a multitude of measurements of the boat and its sails. Q, E and U sail with an IRC rating.
  • Q/E Class split is as follows:
    • Q class IRC > 0.945
    • E class IRC < 0.944
  • Working Boats: a local handicap applied to the Working Boat class(es) which is revised on the basis of performance. The last revision was Spring 2022.
  • Gaffers: a local handicap applied to the gaffer class, which is only occasionally revised. The last revision was August 24th, 2021. A list of all gaffers in the port, together with their handicaps, is here.
  • RYA YTC, powered by the RORC Rating Office: abbreviated to YTC: FSC has adopted YTC
    • as a yardstick for pursuits
    • as the primary rating for W
A YTC may be obtained from the SWYTC Handicap Committee There is no cost involved and you will receive a shiny certificate. YTCs may be verified against the port list.
  • V class is a one-design and the rating is the same for all members of the class.
  • M class is effectively a one design, since the only multihulls which compete are Firebirds and the class wished to be scored on a ‘first past the post’ basis. Should any other multihulls race, the class will revert to its Mocra handicap.
  • Some boats may sail in W and Q, E or U (though not in the same series).

The Table

The includes many boats which have yet to submit a race entry form, but who have sailed at FSC in the past (and who we look forward to seeing in the future).

  • For Q, E and U classes, current IRC ratings may also be found on the online IRC TCC ratings. If a boat has no recent certificate its last known rating is shown with an asterisk.
  • No rating is given in the case of the one-design classes.
  • W class are shown with their (no spinnaker) YTC.
  • If a boat name is in red it indicates we have no record of a current race entry but this is a boat which has raced at FSC in the past
